Menopause Clinic

Menopause is a natural stage of life that occurs when periods stop and pregnancy is no longer possible naturally. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55 as oestrogen levels decline, with the average age of menopause being 51. For some women, menopause can occur earlier, before the age of 40, which is known as premature or early menopause.

Symptoms

Many women experience symptoms during perimenopause and menopause, which can vary in severity and may affect daily life. Common symptoms include:

  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort during intercourse
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Low mood or anxiety
  • Reduced libido
  • Difficulties with concentration and memory
  • Urinary symptoms or incontinence

Symptoms may begin months or years before periods stop and can continue for several years afterwards.

Treatment Options

There are a variety of effective treatments and lifestyle measures available to help manage menopausal symptoms, including:

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) — available as tablets, patches, gels, or implants
  • Vaginal oestrogen treatments, moisturisers, and lubricants for vaginal dryness
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for mood changes or anxiety
  • Diet, exercise, and lifestyle advice to support overall wellbeing

If symptoms are persistent or complex, your GP may refer you to a complex menopause specialist for further assessment and management.
